In March 2023, the first National Animal Welfare Law was passed in Spain. Previously, each independent region had its own rules and laws. The hunting dogs were supposed to be protected by this law, but at the last minute they were exempted from the law otherwise the law would not be passed. The hunting lobby has found its way too strong into Spanish politics.

The problem is that there is really gross structural animal abuse taking place in Spain’s hunting industry (annual turnover 6.5 billion), but there are hardly any laws to do anything about it. Without any law, to get improved welfare for hunting dogs, is fighting the odds.
